  1. Down to Earth Cottonseed meal claims low pesticides, but is not certified organic. 12-12-2 seabird guano is easier to use, but there are heavy metal concerns. Too much alfalfa meal inbalances the potash ratio in wet climates, shutting out calcium. EB Stone worm castings claim to feed their worms only food scraps and cardboard and are organic. Compost, if used, should be from remineralized soils in the PNW-- local compost materials will eventually put too much potash into the soil and ruin the garden or orchard so care is needed, and over mulching will cause problems in wet climates, unlike other more dry areas. These mixes work best after soil testing and balancing with the correct proportions of calcium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus and other elements. The annual remineralization is for replinishing an already balanced soil loosing elements from heavy rainfall and produce removal. Use it sparingly under greenhouse cover where rsin leeching is not so severe. Good gardening and health....
